Medical Cards

Our staff in Mercer's Medical Centre care for a large population of medical card holders. If you are an existing patient and would like to apply for a medical card or a GP visit card, see this link, or call in during opening hours to collect an application form. New patients should call us to make an appointment before applying.

For reasons of good clinical care, it is our usual policy to accept medical card applications only from those who live in reasonable proximity to our practice, i.e. are resident in the Dublin 2, 8 or 12 post codes only. If you do not live in those areas, it is unlikely that we will be in a position to accept you and you should register with a Doctor closer to where you live. If you are currently living in those post codes but move at a subsequent date, again we may request you to register with a Doctor closer to where you live.

You are officially accepted onto the medical card list once the HSE has completed the paperwork which can sometimes take several weeks.

It is important to note that while the medical card will cover you for regular attendances and medications it does not cover all GP costs. For example adult vaccinations, driving license medicals, and Well Person checks are not covered.

Unsure if you are eligible for a medical card?  The HSE website can help you to find out.
