Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP)

Carol Kelly has worked in Mercer's Medical Centre since 2006. She is highly motivated and dedicated to providing the highest standards of care to all the patients she sees. She has furthered her studies many times over the years and we are delighted that in 2011 she qualified as the first Nurse Prescriber (NP) in General Practice in the Dublin Mid Leinster region. She also went on to achieve her MSC Advanced Nursing Practice in 2017, and in 2018, she achieved official registration as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner with the nursing regulator NMBI. She was the 4th ANP in General Practice in Ireland.

 What does an ANP do? 

An ANP/NP is essentially a nurse who is trained to a higher level (usually Masters/MsC), and has achieved competencies to work independently in a number of specialist areas. An ANP can assess your health concerns, physically examine you, order tests and investigations, prescribe medications, treat conditions, and refer to specialists if needed. 

In particular Carol aids in quicker access to care when her GP colleagues are fully booked.

Specialist Interest Areas

Carol provides many services in Mercer's. Her specialist areas include Women's Health, Sexual health, Travel Health, Immunisations, and Chronic Disease Management. She has recently set up a specialist clinic devoted to all Women's Health concerns, including menstrual health concerns, gynaecological complaints, specialist LARC services (including insertion & removal of Mirena, Kyleena, Jaydess, Copper coils, Ballerine and Implanon), and Menopause management. 

She is also highly experienced in the care of people with Type 2 Diabetes, asthma/COPD care and more recently in Obesity management. 

Education

The ANP is required to provide and obtain ongoing education to ensure practice is up to date. Carol provides educational talks for RCSI courses (nurse Prescribing & Advanced Practice), Beaumont Nurses GRAND Rounds, and for the HSE (Childhood Immunisations & Introduction to Practice nursing). She also featured in the HSE education video on best practice in Immunisation skills. She is involved in teaching on a daily basis here in Mercer's with her nursing colleagues & RCSI students. She attends fortnightly educational updates on all the various aspects of General Practice.
